I was busy this evening packing my mobile station for the trip next week. I couldn't find a couple of cables due to the moving so I had to dissemble the current mobile rig to prepare for the trip. Not much room at the work garage anyway for an HF antenna. I will get this rig back once I return the following week. The packing will require two more evenings due to my limited time. I added a gas discharge tube to my tuner tonight. We had a severe storm with tornados and lightening this evening. I sure need to get the lightening protection optimized quick. Oh by the way, when I upped the power on my HF rig, the ALC has been running low. I just upped my PSKA from 250 to 350. The average power out on HF has increased a bit so you might want to check my tones on several bands for quality before I head out west. I will have little time to get them readjusted if the PSKA is set too high but at the higher power setting, the ALC tends to read very low anyway. Well more work to do so I'll say 73! I got my Ham Station suit case packed but with my limited time, I will be unable to check the system to see if it is functioning properly. Today is the resident retreat and I am uncertain as to when we will return home. Tomorrow will be my last quaranteed night to pack my backpack for the trip. I am sure ready for some time off. It's been a long time since I had a full week to myself and the next one will not be until April. Darn windows is goofy-it's hammering the resources so hard that there is a 1-2 sec delay before my characters appear in the transmit box of plusterm. It's amazing one can even load firmware into the PTC using a Microsoft operating system. Well looks like the 40m SWR read somewhat high. Perhaps a little feedline adjustment when I return will improve my signal there. Last night the WX was horrible. It rained so hard that you couldn't see the roadbed. There were reported tornadoes all over and the sky remained lit for an hour from the lightening. Sure is a common occurrence around here so when I get back home, I will need to relocate my 2nd dipole leg further away from the house. It makes me a bit nervous with the end in the attic. 73! Not a big deal I guess but just something else you will have to put back together when you get back home. I'm on 18108 and your tones sound great. Your signal is a nice S7, S8 and I can hear your tones loud and clear, no noise here so it is a strong signal. I use a FSKA and PSKA of 600 for all of my Icom radios. It just worked out that way. Both of my 746's are identical and they do like yours where the less SWR there is the less the ALC shows on the meter. I run ALC pretty much full scale on the lower bands so there will be enough drive for 10 meters. I've tested very close for overdriving and my signal is very clean, no splatter. The Icom's all seem to have clean transmitters, better than the Kenwood's I've used in the past. We had a grand visit with the family in Sparks... Got home close to 9:30 PM last evening and I was pretty shot. Ginny too... Strange how you run out of gas when you get older, especially driving somewhere and spending the day and evening. Too bad there isn't a better connection for data. 26K isn't bad and nothing you can do about it short of asking for DSL service. Obviously, your telephone office is located some distance and there must be an analog loop in it somewhere getting to you, or a digital concentrator, that might be more like it, a digital concentrator and with such the maximum speed would be 28.8 Kb/s. Such use is to save costs going back to a central office that may be located 5 or more cable miles away. I knew about Ian leaving you a message on 40 and testing on 80. We had a keyboard contact late last night and he told me about it. I told him a few days ago that you were moved in, that your base was working there and that the antenna seemed much improved. Speaking of antenna improvements, your 30 meter signal right now is a steady S8, very nice and I could not do this from your apartment. I've had consistent 30 meter contacts with you over various hours since you have moved. Did you set the 706 antenna tuner to operate on 40 meters? If so, did it help? For simplicity, if you want to message leave a message on your PTC under AE4TM-2. If you use my base use AE4TM since I check in on my base that way. Bet I cranked out an hour on my base transferring one file. Well 30 W7KP de AE4TM-2 > *** file w7kp nr: 7 saved next?s Hi Ed: Looks like you were going to leave a message... Well, I'll turn the mailbox back on when we finish. Thanks a bunch for checking in... I was so relieved to know you arrived OK on LV and also that your baggage was there too! Amazing for sure and very good. OK about the stop at AES, good deal... I heard activity on 21079 earlier, I came in the den to call you and turned the speaker on and as it scanned through I could hear Pactor-II, a strong signal and a weak chirping acknowledging station. I figured it might be you testing to your base. Well, you are all set... A storm is coming in off the Pacific. Supposed to be here around midnight. It may cover a little bit down to DV. I'll have to look at the latest satellite views for this area. The animated one that shows the storm moving as well as the animated radar summary for Nevada and Calif. Ginny is here with me, she has been doing laundry. I need to give her a minor hand now so I'll turn it back to you for comments. BTU AE4TM-2 de W7KP > Was going to wrap up and must have hit a control char. This laptop has a different KB layout. ... RR, I'm again rolling as the local AF guards are standing on top of their vehicles to announce their presence to me. They seem to be nervous so I'm out of here.... .. Did you update the DVNP morning report? If you do it will be easier to leave it under AE4TM-2 on your mailbox. Hope snow doesn't close the higher roads in Death Valley. BTU W7KP de AE4TM-2 > Great Ed.... I need a second... Coughing OK.. I forgot about the DVNP weather report. I'll do that for you. OK about addressing mbx messages. Makes sense to me... It is so warm right now, a warm storm in my opinion as it is coming in from the Pacific more from the south. Warmer there this morning. You cannot believe the weather news here, they do it every year jumping the gun about snow fall in the Sierra's. To me it is too warm and if any snow, it will be dustings at the very highest elevations. When I looked at the weather news last this morning, the animated satellite view, the storm almost cuts off at DVNP, mostly north of it and swirls back into Baker and area... So maybe NVNP will not get a bunch but likely some rain showers. More when I have a chance to watch the satellite and weather forecasts. Take it Ed, Ginny needs help for a minute. It is very light cloud cover. No one is getting rain other than up north of us in Nevada where a couple of mtn peaks looked like it was getting light snow. The temperature at the house is 66 degrees, thin cloudy skies, some puffy clouds but thin.. Some blue showing so it isn't completely dense. The approaching storm doesn't look all that dense to me as it comes from the Pacific on a SE angle, cutting into central Calif, centered at Reno and heading towards Elko. It is a wide swath and not dense in the DVNP area, thin clouds over the area and the rain shadow effect is very apparent from the mountains lying west of DVNP where they tend to bunch and then very thin leaving and covering DV. I doubt you will have much, likely rain showers and I'll be amazed if any snow... Maybe a dusting. I'll keep and eye on the satellite and radar views. We really dont know how Bin Laden is telling his followers when to attack. Sure hope he isnt using the cover of encrypted WinLink technology! BTU W7KP de AE4TM-2 > AE4TM-2 de W7KP > Hi Ed... Real good about working Loren a few minutes ago.... The darn Intellicast site is so slow now.... It looks like they are handing off to a snooper, some outfit that tries to read your info when connected. I have cookies off and it holds at the same level for almost a minute. Been doing this all day when I call. OS/2 won't let them get away with that deep snooping they try to do... A free site but you pay! ha Yes, I think the WinLid situation needs looking into. But it seems like they miss the obvious all of the time. So much of government is incompetent, what can I say... I see in the news that the rental car that Atta used has a white powder in the trunk, discovered by the car rental outfit. The car has been set aside since his use. This power was reported to the FBI and they are not checking it out according to the news. What? more incompetence? Probably so.... We will have heck to pay for the Clinton years, the government is top heavy with incompetence.... The satellite animation is running now... I'll look. Pretty dense clouds over everything but DV, there the rain shadow effect really is evident. I'll turn it back and look at the radar summary... It is also animated. BTU Good deal on your location... AE4TM-2 de W7KP > RR the clouds look thin now. I am just passing Stove Pipe Wells now headed to Mahogany. Hal as for WinLink I am really concerned as to why the FCC doesnt ban the mode when the vast majority of countries have already do so. I sure hope my constant complaining doesnt cause me trouble in the future. You never know what might happen when the FCC allows the fox to run the hen house.... W7KP de AE4TM-2 > I agree Ed... I'm sure it is low priority now. It shouldn't be because of the nature of its encryption ability. Well Ed, I need to take a break. Ginny has my coffee and I would like to watch the news I taped. At least the headlines, lots of fast forward material in the news of course. Wishing you a good evening... Oh, no rain hitting the ground anywhere. The cloud cover includes California and most of Nevada. Some high altitude moisture but it isn't hitting the ground. Nothing in Nevada and the radar summaries show DV very clear. DV is somewhat on the edge of the storm as the main part is north of DV, centered more through Carson City/Reno and headed NE somewhat in a big swath and some swirling that covers most of the state. Not dense enough now to do anything. I suspect there will be some light snow in the mountain tops where the storm centers, maybe a dusting on Telescope. 73 for now... Thanks for the update... I called you back so you could drive and not bother with the radio. I have the animated radar summary up now. That storm is really out of DV, just the residual part left and still packing up against the mtns. I can't see where you are going to have any serious gully washers. The actual storm band, a broad swath of a storm front is out of DV, just cleared it and is heading west at a pretty good clip. Lots of energy in the jet stream and it will blow it all out of the area. We are seeing it here as the storm was a big front that angled more east at the north end and more west at the far south end, So.Cal. The area you are in is clear of the main storm but I can see the residual stuff packed up against the mountains, so it could be that the mountain tops at the upper elevations would get a dusting of snow. Maybe several inches at the very upper elevations. Too warm of a storm actually as it is sub-tropical. I think you will be OK... That stuff that is hitting your area is very small on the radar summary and it is breaking up. What I'm looking at is 34 minutes old. The satellite loop was only 15 minutes old when I looked at it. That was the last image.... I'm looking at it again and it is 10 minutes old. The main storm is gone, just the residual stuff that is swirling in behind it a little and packing up against the west mountains. I think we will take off to the Cock and Bull again. Might as well. The satellite loop shows clear skies all over. Some very thin water vapor here and there but clear skies. The storm is long gone and I don't see anything in the Pacific coming this way for a while. BTU AE4TM-2 de W7KP > Good morning Hal and Ginny Thanks for the updated WX. It is clear and extremely beautiful here. Glad I came. We might hang out here an hour or two then attempt to drive down Goler Wash since there are two vehicles. This would take us out in the Panamint Valley where we could head our ways. It was definately interesting spending the night with a big movie director. The guy just turned 50 and with the recent Sept 11 events most of the movies he was working on got cancelled. I'll post the DVNP weather when it is available. Yesterday it was about 9:50 AM before it was posted. Really of not much value at this time today I think as it will be clear for the most part. Some of this thin water vapor will form in the afternoon and maybe pack in against the mountains. The Reno weather news reported some light cloudiness later today and that is what it is. OK about the bumpy road. BTU AE4TM-2 de W7KP > Mengle Pass ahead. Charles Manson camp 2 miles W7KP de AE4TM-2 > Yes, I remember now... You mentioned that fact before. Even that he signed into the log book. I think that is right. Well, good deal Ed... I'm sure you are having a great time, I know how beautiful it is after a storm. Maybe some of the dust has been settled on the roads as well. Enjoy your day, I'll post the latest DVNP weather when it becomes available. No real news.... Much more talk about the cross-contamination possibilities in the US mail now. One 61 year old lady died from the Anthrax exposure he fell into and the investigators are puzzled as to where she got it. This mail thing is a problem, all of the darn junk mail we all receive. I'm about to notify the postal system that I will only accept 1st Class mail, no bulk or junk mail. They created this terrible system advertising for junk mail, if you recall, and now it floods the mail system. Can you imagine if millions of Americans refuse delivery of junk mail? I think it is a great idea and I've been tempted to tip off the news networks to report that you can do that. I know it is very hard to type now... So we can catch up later. We drove some rugged roads to get to the Manson Bowen Ranch yesterday. David nearly flipped his vehicle over and I felt mine slide a bit here and there as well. Sure bet the rental agency would freak if they saw where I took this truck. For lunch we stopped at Panamint Springs resort and I got a 1 pounder which stayed with me for dinner. Good thing because of the springs. We must have drove 75 miles of washboard roads to get here and low and behold there was a "town" of people out here. It's amazing. As we sat in the hot springs the kids came by in costume handing out candy. I never expected such a place. Well I am still deciding where to go today. I will stay here until atleast 1pm then make up my mind if I want to go back to Mahogany. David is considering one more night as well before heading towards Yosemite for a talk. One favor, he would like to know which passes are open in the Sierras. The DVNP AM report lists just two. Perhaps you can get additional info off the www. I will check back in a little later as I need to save fuel. I will try to get more pictures of this place. Only problem is that the springs are continuously occupied by au naturel sun bathers. Come next year, I will remember the trick-or-treaters coming up to us when I was soaking under the moonlight. Tomorrow, David will leave around 5am and I will pull out around 8am. From there, I will skirt around the N end of the park heading from Bishop to Gold Field. From there I will drop back down to DVNP and try to make Mahogany Flat. If I start early Sat and get my packs ready for the plane I should be able to make a Sat trip up Telescope Peak. OK about the schedule today and tonight. Then an attempt to reach Telescope Peak Saturday after packing. Saturday will be a busy day for you... OK about the jet buzzing around there.... Hope the camera continues to work via a reduction of pictures taken. Interesting that the Sony I had here also ate floppy disks, ate them each time it tried to lay down a picture. Like I told you, it would leave a picture 1 out of about 6 tries, meaning I had 5 shot floppy disks. This is the best drive I have ever been on in my entire life. It beats Great Basin by so much that you would have to see it for yourself as words can't describe. This is not the death valley I have not known from the past and I can guarantee you I will be back. I just reached the Eureka Dunes paved road and have a westward trek 9 miles to Big Pine. The snow capped mtns to the west just make a fantastic backdrop to the high Alkane Meadows I have been driving thru all morning. The best part was all the forested peaks and rolling hills. I just pulled over for dinner and fuel before going to Mahogany. It will be cold there so I will go directly to my tree hammock. Today was a good day that I will NEVER FORGET. After the last connect, I made it to Bishop where I got gas and 10 disks. Oops, I also met a long time ham pal who runs the local 94 net. He works at the PO and the entire town knows him. His dad is also the town physician who has tried to recruit me before I chose psych. I doubt they could use me now, haw. After that, I went around the N side of DVNP and dropped down to Lathrop Wells for my dinner. (WIN LID on us now). One problem has developed. My laptop charger has died so I only have 1 1/2 hrs of laptop power. I will keep the 30m PTC running til I reach Mahogany then QRT. I will again connect in the morning for a brief QSO before packing up the station for the flight home. Better get going so I can get sleep. It's cold here - missing the hot spr already.... .. It seems the digital camera is OK and the laptop floppy drive is eating the disks when it writes to files. Reading seems to be OK. I spent one hour just transferring the mobile pactor QSO files to the PTC mailbox then rereading them with the Gateway. Got this task done. However, I have all those Death Valley shots that I am unsure how to transfer to the Gateway. Perhaps some ideas using the COM port??? My plane landed at 2:50pm CST and I made a trip to the apartment since the sun was out. Got my computer desk and some more clothes before heading to the house. I noticed that Gita requested a mail forwarding and unfortunately she put a permanant change so I expect the PostOffice will sell out address to all those junk mailers. Sure wish I had of changed it myself before leaving but guess it's too late now. Well, I need to get to unpacking now. I seem to be overwhealmed with the move and unpacking. 73! TRX F s ae4tm Sunday evening, 6:59 PM PST ENTER TEXT FOR: AE4TM END WITH CTRL-Z OR NNNN enter text for: ae4tm end with ctrl-z or nnnn Good Evening Ed: Thanks for letting us know you made it home OK. I know you have been very busy and still have tons to do yet. I've been thinking of how you might transfer the pictures to the new laptop. If you had a modem in the old laptop you could use a modem terminal program and do a Z-Modem transfer. Many of the good old standby terminal programs did that. To connect the two laptops you have to use a null-modem cable or a null-modem connector. All it does it swap the TXD and RXD leads, Send/Receive leads so the two modems can talk to each other. I know there are programs to allow a direct null-cable connection to two computer com ports but I don't have any experience with them. I thought about it quite a bit and can't come up with anything if you do not have a modem for the laptop. Even an external modem... One method would be to take a full floppy disk worth of pictures, then zip them as a single bundle. Then use 7Plus to send it to the PTC-II. You would have to tell 7Plus not to break up the bundle. That would go pretty good, especially if you can communicate at 38400 baud. Good luck with it Ed... I'm in the den going to try and catch up with a couple of messages and also an email we received from friends that we haven't heard from in months. Let me know what you devised to download the pictures... Hope you can get enough rest overnight... Oh, that's a shame about the mail transfer notice. I think you could cancel it and put in another one. Boy, using a temporary mail change really is slick. You would not receive any junk mail even if it was sent. Plus, the Postal Service doesn't sell those lists. I bet you could cancel the one out there now and put in for a temporary. Worth a try... 73 from both of us...
